Major TEs declare 20% puja bonus

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Sept 2 - In spite of the fact that the tea industry incurred losses this financial year due to unfavourable weather conditions, major tea industries in the State have declared puja bonus for the workers at 20 per cent, Dileshwar Tanti, general secretary of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha told The Assam Tribune.

McLeod Russel India Ltd, which owns the highest number of 48 tea plantations in the State, has agreed to disburse 20 per cent bonus to its workers.

Similarly, managements of James Warren Tea Limited, Rossel Tea India Limited, Jay Shree Tea & Industries Limited, The Jorehaut Tea Limited, MK Shah Export Limited, MK Jokai Agri Plantations Private Limited, Silonibari Tea Company Limited and Dufflating Tea Estate have agreed to pay 20 per cent bonus.

However, Dolahat Tea Estate will pay 15 per cent bonus, the ACMS general secretary stated.

The bonus amount has not been finalised with other plantations. Tanti said that the Assam Company and Andrew Yule will hold discussion with ACMS on September 4, while Apeejay Tea Limited, Goodricke, TATAs Amalgamated Plantations, MK Tea Company Private Limited and Jokai plantations will finalise the issue on September 6. He said that some of the tea industries will be releasing the bonus in two instalments.

The ACMS has demanded that the tea estates release the bonus at least 15 days before the Durga Puja. The ACMS leadership has asked the planters to ensure that they pay at least the same per cent of bonus they paid to their workers last year, and not anything less.
