Major revamp of Gandhi Mandap complex soon

GUWAHATI, Jan 28 - The Guwahati Smart City Ltd will carry out a major refurbishment of the historic Gandhi Mandap complex here at a project cost of over Rs 3 crore and the tender process for the work has been allotted.

Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), told The Assam Tribune that the project for Gandhi Mandap�s refurbishment includes landscape development and upgrade of amenities, and will be carried out under the Guwahati Smart City Ltd.

�The estimated cost for the works is Rs 3.1 crore and the total land for carrying out the works is approximately 1.07 hectares. The construction period will four months. The work has been awarded to M/s Munnaf Ahmed,� said Dr Angamuthu.

He said that the project includes landscape development, including hardscape and softscape. �It will involve work on the landscape around the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, landscape of the front and entry point, renovation of the existing stage, renovation of the existing shade, development of food court and setting up of a kiosk for dry food items, redevelopment of the forest trail, and work on the retaining wall as well as on the walkway and bridge,� added the DC.

He said that Gandhi Mandap is one of Guwahati's vintage points.

�The objective is to preserve the heritage and historical significance associated with the place and to convert it into a potential tourism spot with naturally existing scenic viewpoints. The refurbishing and beautification of the Gandhi Mandap Memorial Complex was suggested by the Additional Chief Secretary (Guwahati Development Department) in May 2017. The GSCL/Tata Consulting Engineers conceived this project and presented this concept plan. Based on it, a feasibility report and a detailed project report were prepared, which was followed by the tender process,� said Dr Angamuthu.
