Major eviction drive by GMDA

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 19 In a major eviction drive along the Bahini river to rid the eco-sensitive areas of all illegal encroachments, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) today evicted 12 illegal constructions from Gorhchuk area of the city.

The eviction drive that had started three days back, is supposed to clear nearly 150 bighas of land within a week from now. The illegal structures were mostly big warehouses constructed by traders without any permission from the authorities.

Big warehouses spread over 40 thousand square feet to one lakh square feet of land, were used to store goods and were also given on lease. These illegal constructions were a threat to the eco-sensitive area. Yesterday, six such warehouses were completely demolished in Paschim Boragaon area, said GMDA CEO Anurag Singh.

GMDA Chairman Dhiren Baruah, who also supervised the eviction drive today, said that this eviction drive was a major success of the GMDA. It was a concerted effort on the part of the GMDA, to remove the illegal encroachments. We would take the legal recourse, so that no re-encroachment ever occurs in this area. The drive would continue in the coming days as well, added Baruah.

The GMDA had issued a notification against 45 such illegal structures which were in the area for a long period. The eviction drive will cover the ISBT point and Lokhra areas also.
