Major Ashish K Roy memorial badminton begins

SILCHAR, Dec 17 - The 3rd Major Ashish Kumar Roy memorial badminton tournament organised by the Recreation Club of Cachar Cancer Hospital (CCH), Silchar and Major Ashish Kumar Roy Foundation got underway on Thursday. Brigadier Manish Erry of the Indian Army inaugurated the four-day tournament.Other officials of the Indian Army, Prof DP Roy, secretary of the hospital society and other staff members of the hospital were present during the inaugural ceremony.

As many as 40 shuttlers are participating in the competition. The competition includes singles and doubles matches for men and women. The matches will be played on the concrete court in the hospital premises.

Speaking on the occasion, Major Erry said that he is happy to be part of such a tournament played in the memory of a valiant soldier who laid down his life for the cause of the nation. �Such sports events will promote the feeling of oneness among the people in the society,� he said.

Dr Ravi Kannan said, �Three years ago, members of the foundation decided to start a sports event in the memory of Major Roy. The event began with limited resources and participation, but over the years people have taken keen interest in participating and the facilities have also improved.�

Dr Kannan also acknowledged the involvement of the Army officers in organising such an event.

The tournament will conclude on December 20.
