Maiden Panchayat polls for UPF, JMM

By Staff CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Dec 20 It will be a maiden contest for Assams infant political groups - United Peoples Front (UPF) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the ensuing Panchayat polls.

UPF, which in Assamese is referred to as Hongjukta Lok Morcha has decided to field candidates in at least seven districts of the State Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. The party general secretary (administration), Shyamal Boruah told The Assam Tribune that its election committee was scrutinising profiles of candidates for the polls. The eleven- member election committee of the party is headed by Tapan Sharma Baruah.

United Peoples Front headed by Holiram Terrang was formally launched on January 22 last in Guwahati. Terrang, the party president is a former MLA of Boithalangso LAC and a senior Karbi politician.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in the State is led by little-known Jana Prakash Tanti. The party had contested in the past Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly polls but has never fielded candidates in the States Panchayat elections. For election campaigns, the party is largely depended on leaders from Jharkhand. The party managed to assemble a huge gathering for a public meeting at Bajipohu in Tingkhong LAC on December 16 where ministers and JMM leaders from Jharkhand delivered their exhortations. Jana Prakash Tanti said that the party would concentrate only in Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sonitpur districts. If eligible candidates come forward, we are prepared to sponsor them from the party for the polls, Tanti said.
