GUWAHATI, April 17 - The Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress today staged a protest in front of Rajiv Bhawan, the headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), against the rise in the number of rape cases in the country.
In a statement, the Mahila Congress said the ghastly incidents of gang rape for several days and the subsequent murder of a minor girl at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir and the rape of a teenage girl allegedly by a BJP MLA at Unnao in Uttar Pradesh have spread panic among women and girls throughout the country.
Mahila Congress members demanded urgent steps to bring the culprits to book, and not spare even the MLA or his alleged accomplices. The culprits should be given stringent punishment, including capital punishment, they demanded.
Pradesh Mahila Congress president Shanaz Yasmin Haque appealed to the people to unite against such crimes that have brought disrepute to the nation.
The Mahila Congress leader also pleaded for urgent steps to amend the existing legislations, and, if required, for endorsement of new legislations to check such crimes.
Haque lamented that the much-touted slogan Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the girl child and educate her) of the BJP government at the Centre has become a farce, exposing the lack of sincerity of the ruling party towards upholding the cause of the girl child.
