Mahanta still being probed: Himanta

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, June 12 The State government today made it clear that former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is still under the purview of investigation in connection to the secret killings and that action would be taken against everyone directly or indirectly involved in the secret killings as per the law of the country.

Government spokesperson Himanta Biswa Sarma informed media persons here that the KN Saikia Commission, which probed the secret killings, has indicted Mahanta without mincing words.

The judicial inquiry has conclusively proved that former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was a part of the secret killings. Mahanta hasnt been given clean chit till now, said Sarma adding that the Congress has kept its promise made to the people by stopping secret killings.

As directed by the KN Saikia Commission, the government has reopened all the cases and the CID is presently investigating 17 such cases.

Mahanta has, of late, been talking a lot about the secret killings even going to the extent of claiming that there were no secret killings during the AGP tenure. We appeal to Mahanta not to make any comment on the secret killings as he has no moral right to do so, said Sarma.

On the other hand, the minister challenged Mahanta to come up with a White Paper on the difference in Plan allocation between Assam and other States since 2001. It needs to be mentioned here that Mahanta had recently commented on the States economy claiming credit for streamlining the economy that was left in a shambles by the Congress.

The AGP left the economy in a state of devastation with a burden of Rs 11,000 crore debt. The treasury was empty, the State was in an overdraft position and the government employees were deprived of their facilities. Mahanta is trying to mislead the people by placing wrong facts before them, Sarma said again requesting Mahanta to refrain from commenting on the States growth and development.
