GUWAHATI, May 11 Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today accused the State government of failing to address the basic issues of the people, including power supply and price rise, and demanded that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi step down owing moral responsibility for the failure on these two fronts.
In a statement, Mahanta said that the last 11 years of Congress rule in the State had been characterised by total chaos and misgovernance. He said that all along the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues have been misleading the people by harping on perceived development whereas the truth was that the State was witnessing a rapid deterioration of the many ills afflicting it.
Corruption has attained an all-time high during the Congress rule with all sorts of anomalies spreading into every departments. The black markateers, in connivance with the administration, are having a field day while the common man continues to languish, said Mahanta.
Mahanta demanded that the State government initiate every measure to ensure adequate supply of power and to bring down the prices of essential commodities at the earliest.
The All Assam Students Union has also decried the State government for remaining a mute spectator to the unprecedented rise in the prices of all essential commodities, including foodgrain.
In a statement, the student body said that it would conduct a survey of the difference in the prices of essential commodities in the past fortnight by visiting households in different areas on May 14.
