Mahanta seeks to step down as AGP chief

GUWAHATI, July 14 � In a significant development for regional politics in the State, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta asked his party to 'relieve' him of the office of party president.

According to AGP general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita, at the party's central executive committee meeting held at the party's Ambari headquarters here today, Mahanta assumed the moral responsibility for the party's electoral debacles, particularly in the latest Lok Sabha elections, and asked the party to relive him of the office of the party president.

Following this, the meeting authorised party working president Atul Bora to assume the responsibility of the party president for the time being, Kalita said.

The issue will be placed before the general house, which is scheduled to meet at the same venue tomorrow, for a final decision.

Moreover, the issue of assuming collective responsibility for the electoral debacles of the party by the members of the central executive committee, which was raised by a section of the central executive committee members today, will also be placed before the general house tomorrow, Kalita said.
