Mahanta demands repeal of notification

By Correspondent

JORHAT,Oct 10 - Expressing serious concern over the Central governments notification to provide shelter to non-Muslim migrants, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta here today said that the government should repeal the notification and cancel the decision of imposing the burden of illegal migrants, who came to Assam after the cut-off date of March 25,1971, on the State alone.

Addressing a press conference at the Jorhat Circuit House, Mahanta said that AGP would never compromise on their decades-long demand of detection and deportation of illegal migrants who infiltrated from Bangladesh after March 25, 1971.

Assam is not a dumping ground for illegal migrants, said Mahanta.

He also demanded the State government to withdraw the taxes which were imposed on the small tea growers of the State. According to him the small tea-growers have contributed to the rural economy immensely as most of them belong to rural areas.
