Lokpriya�s 129th birth anniversary celebrated at Raha

RAHA, June 8 - �Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi was the first Chief Minister of Assam after Independence. He was the Chief Minister (then called Prime Minister) of Assam from September 19, 1938 to November 17, 1939 and again from February 11, 1946 until India�s independence on August 15, 1947. He then became the Chief Minister of Assam and remained in office until his death on August 5, 1950. Today on his 129th birth anniversary we pay him homage for being the kind, loved, respectful and charitable persona which made him known as �Lokpriya� (meaning beloved of the people)�, said Biswajit Pegu, DC, Nagaon while taking part as the honourable guest during the 129th birth anniversary celebrations of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi on June 6 at Raha.

Referring to Bordoloi s patriotism and commitment towards his motherland, the DC further said that his dedication was even appreciated by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was such a man whom everyone regardless of caste, language, race, works and from hills to plains loved.

Remembering Bordoloi as a true leader of the masses, who sacrificed everything for the cause of the country, Raha MLA Dimbeswar Das said that Gopinath Bordoloi was very close to hearts of the people of Assam. His works would always motivate the younger generations, the MLA said in his speech. YS Wunglengton, director, Directorate of Museums, Guwahati, Assam said, �Gopinath Bordoloi was a great patriot but his greatest quality was that he taught thousands of people how to love one�s motherland. In this journey let us refresh ourselves with his immense contribution for the freedom of Nation from the British rule,� he added.

Pallavi Kachary, Circle Officer, Raha also paid her tribute to the great leader of the masses. In her speech , she said, �We are proud of Gopinath Bordoloi who played a strong role during the grouping and saved Assam from being included in Pakistan. Today Assam is proud of this great man for his tremendous dedication to the cause of Assam.�

The birth anniversary function was organised by the Directorate of Museums, Assam in association with local administration. A good number of residents, school children also attended the programme and paid floral tributes to the great leader.

It might be added here that the Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi Memorial Museum, Raha is a personalia Museum established at the Raha State Dispensary premises in memory of Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi in 1998 and inaugurated by then Governor Late SK Sinha on June 6, 1998.

The museum was reopened after renovation to the general public by the Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal on June 6, 2017.
