IMPHAL, March 19 � Former Deputy Speaker Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh, who was elected unanimously on the first day of the 10th Assembly session here, became one of the youngest Speakers of the State Assemblies in the country.
The 44-year-old Congress MLA was unanimously elected as the 18th Speaker of Manipur Assembly at its new Assembly hall here at Thangmeiband capitol complex without any voice vote at 10 am today, as 34 Congress legislators supported Lokeshwar while submitting the nomination papers on the last day (Saturday) for the post of Speaker.
The present Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken was just 39-year-old when he became India�s youngest Speaker representing Delhi Legislative Assembly in January 2001.
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, outgoing Speaker Irengbam Hemochandra, and six other Congress legislators � T Mangibabu, K Meghachandra, AK Mirabai, Md Abdul Nasir, Dr Ng Bijoy, Dr Kh Ratan � two Manipur Congress legislators K Thamarjit and P Brojen, Trinamool legislature wing leader Dr I Ibohalbi, besides lone legislators of Nationalist Congress Party and Lokjansakti L Ibomcha and K Shyam also participated the felicitation of the new Speaker.
A resident of Sagolmang Mamang Leikai in Manipur�s Imphal East district, Lokeshwar, who was elected to the Assembly for the second term from Khundrakpam, had been the Speaker incharge for three months from September 30 to December 22, 2010, due to the expiry of the then Speaker Dr S Budhichandra Singh.
