IMPHAL, June 15 - Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan inaugurated the four-day 16th North East Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA) Conference at Manipur Assembly premises on Thursday.
Addressing the Conference, Mahajan said that India cannot develop without development of North East as it is considered as a place of sanctity and the most auspicious direction where most powerful, positive and progressive energies are generated.
Urging the legislators of NE States �to reflect the hopes and aspirations, even the fears and frustrations of the people on the floor of the House and influence policy making in the process,� she said, �As elected representatives, we have a great role to play in accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, by way of legislations, house debate and parliamentary oversight, coordination with the executive irrespective of whether we are from the Treasury benches or the Opposition.�
She opined that the legislators to think how we will cooperate or how we can do something, apart from asking what Central Government is doing, as legislators is the bridge between the government and the public.
Stating the importance of establishing Speaker�s Research Initiative (SRI) in Lok Sabha in July 2015 to generate high-quality research inputs on strategic and topical issues, she said , �I believe that a similar mechanism for NE States would be of great help to the legislators.�
Highlighting the Centre�s initiative for the development of the region, she said , �Our Prime Minister pays special attention to NE States.
Acknowledging lack of infrastructure, connectivity, ethnic issues, etc., in the region which require close attention, she said, however, if all of us join hands together and work collectively for development and progress of all our countrymen then no problem in this world is insurmountable.�
Manipur Speaker Yumnam Khemchand, Meghalaya Speaker AT Mondal and Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur Y Joykumar Singh also spoke at the function.
The conference will deliberate on themes such as �NE and Look East Policy�, �Special plan for development of railways and airways for speedy economic development of NE�, and �Setting up of a chapter of SRI in NE�.
The conference which was attended by Deputy Lok Sabha Speaker Dr M Thambidurai, Speakers of all NE States excluding Sikkim and Tripura, will conclude on June 18.
