JORABAT, Nov 2 - The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), which has been entrusted with constructing the North-east headquarter building of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) at Nazirakhat in Sonapur, was today compelled to stop work jointly by the Dimoria AASU unit and the Nazirakhat Sristikaami Mahila Sangha (affiliated to the Assam Mahila Sangha).
Members of the Sristikaami Mahila Sangha alleged that the land on which the NIA was constructing its HQ building belonged to eight indigenous people and compensation for the land was not paid to the people.
Also, due to heavy earth work like cutting and filling carried out at the construction site, the natural drainage of the area has been blocked. This has resulted in regular flash floods in the area.
Secretary of Sristikaami Mahila Sangha Manju Basumatary alleged that despite repeated information given to the Sonapur circle office and the Kamrup district administration, no step has been taken to redress the grievances the the affected people. She said unless remedial steps are taken by the NIA and NBCC authorities, no construction work will be allowed at the site.
Dimoria AASU unit chief advisor Dibya Jyoti Medhi also condemned the development and demanded justice for the local people. He warned no anti-local people acts would be allowed in Dimoria region. The authorities must have to sort out the matter with the local people through talks and until then, no construction work will be allowed at the site, he warned.
