Lizard seized

IMPHAL, May 27 - In a major haul, troops of Assam Rifles seized two Tokey Geckos at the Check Post at Khudengthabi on Imphal-Moreh National Highway on Saturday, a press release said.

A Pulsar bike was intercepted at the check post and two Tokay Geckos were seized from one Seitinthang Haokip of Moreh. The person along with the seized wildlife were handed over to Forest department, the release added.

Tokey Gecko, a highly endangered lizard, listed in the schedule III of Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972, are being illegally caught and trafficked from the State to Southeast Asian countries where many people believe that medicines made from it can cure many diseases.

Meanwhile, two Kingfishers (Alcedo atthis), an endangered species in Manipur were rescued by staff of Kakching Forest Range Office on Saturday.
