By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 16 The Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Culture, 2012 instituted by the Jeewan Ram Mungi Devi Goenka Memorial Public Charitable Trust, were awarded to three eminent cultural figures of Assam today.

Prominent cine personality Rohini Hattangadi handed over the honours to cultural activist, film maker and writer Jibon Borah, distinguished actor Bhola Kotoky, and film director and TV personality Dara Ahmed. The honours comprised a citation and a cash award of Rs 50,000 each.

The sixth JRMD Goenka Memorial Lecture, 2012 delivered by noted writer and critic Harekrishna Deka was part of the programme at the citys ITA Centre for Performing Arts.

In his lecture, Deka said Cinema has turned into a popular media,it is often thought that it can have harmful affect on the minds of the people. It can cater to prurient tastes and lead the impressionable audience to deviate from the values of the societyBut it would be wrong to say that cinema does not have positive role in society as a media.

In his view, cinema provided a portrayal of society, either as representation of society or as views of life as rooted to the social milieu. It is a visual text of society in various probable and actual relations, Deka observed.

Guest of honour, K Hariharan, who recalled his associations from film personalities from Assam, delivered an animated speech that encompassed the aesthetic as well as the economic dimensions of Indian cinema in a historical and social context.
