LF announces candidates for Tripura polls

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Jan 10 While the Opposition is struggling to prepare the final list of candidates, the ruling Left Front has declared its candidates for the coming Assembly elections in 59 constituencies.

Seven sitting MLAs have been dropped due to delimitation and health ground while altogether 12 candidates will contest the election for the first time.

The seven sitting MLAs who were denied of party tickets include Bijoy Roy, Bidhubhusan Malakar, Prashanta Debbarma, Keshab Majumder, Narayan Rupini, Partha Das and Sachindra Debbarma.

The CPM, the dominant partner of the Front, will contest 55 of the sixty seats while RSP and CPI have been given two seats each, leaving only one seat to be fought by Forward Bloc.

Announcing the candidates list on Wednesday, Left Front convener Khagen Das called upon the electorate to make the Front victorious in all the 60 Assembly seats.

People will vote for the Left Front to carry forward the development activities, peace and tranquility, he said.

He said the Left Front would win all the Assembly seats like it had registered in the 1978 Assembly elections when Congress could not open its account in the seat tally.

Das said the elections would probably be held in February as the CPM delegation demanded before the full-bench of the Election Commission. On the revision of electoral rolls, front convener alleged the Congress has been trying to delay the revision process by submitting old complaints and that too on white papers.

We have never seen complaints on white papers being entertained by election machinery. But it has been happening here following instruction from the Election Commission, he said. Das also criticized Congress MLA Subal Bhowmiks reported comment, that the full-bench EC was on a picnic trip to the State. It is not wise to make such comment against a constitutional body. CPM secretary Bijan Dhar and party spokesman Goutam Das were also present in the press briefing.
