'Leadership targeted when party not in power'

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Oct 30 - Rajya Sabha member and senior Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury has observed, it is the nature of the beast in politics to blame the leadership when the party is not in power. She said, when things are down for a party in politics the easiest target is the leadership, but most fail to put in proper perspective their reason to exit.

She was replying to a specific question relating to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. Over recent times, several senior Congress leaders across the country have raised Rahul Gandhis leadership quality and quit the party.

Chowdhury, who was here earlier this week, lashed out at the Congress deserters, saying, some think they will always be in power, but that is not possible. Politics is such a thing that everyone wants to be in power. But in poltics there can be good things happening and also bad. Those who stay grounded can see it that politics is cyclic. You cannot always remain in power, Chowdhury added.

The Congress leader said deserters who enjoyed their posts and power when the going was good for the party didnt raise the leadership issue then. They should have raised the issue when they were being offered the posts and power and rejected those, she said.

She, nonetheless added, the party is strong enough to withstand these charges. We are strong enough, the Rajya Sabha member added.

Chowdhury, however, said in a big party like the Congress aberrations do happen and it is the responsibility of the local leaders to bring out the views and stand of the party workers correctly before the central leadership.

There are allegations that the views of the party workers were overlooked while suspending Syiem. It is not true we dont hear what our workers are saying. They are our spine. We work for the welfare of our workers, Chowdhury stated.
