Laxmi Narayan temple robbed

AGARTALA, Aug 2 - In a daring incident, a group of thieves robbed Laxmi Narayan Temple, one of the holiest pilgrimages in the capital city here and took away gold ornaments worth Rs 6 lakh in the wee hours of Thursday, according to the temple authority.

Stolen gold ornaments included two mukuts (crowns) and two bangles while some silver ornaments of Narayan and Laxmi were also taken away.

The theft came to the light when the guard woke up early in the morning and found the main entrance broken. The guard raised alarm and devotees flocked to the temple.

�We got information of the theft at 7.30 am and a police team along with dog squad rushed to the spot. Cops have been able to recover four gold mukut (crowns) and two golden bangles�, said SP, West Tripura district, Ajit Pratap Singh. However, a silver flute still remained missing.

According to the head priest, the temple authority is not in a position to say how much gold and silver ornaments were stolen as the District Magistrate�s Office, West Tripura keeps the records.

The Laxmi Naryan temple was built by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Bahadur.
