GUWAHATI, March 25 � Life is certainly not a bed of roses � but for some the problems of life are bigger than the rest. And why this is so no one knows. But the members of Probhati Laughing Club in Dwarakanagar know one thing for sure � in pain and happiness they must keep smiling.
It needs to be mentioned here that members of this club which is currently the only functional laughing club in the city have been through pain and loss. Life has not been kind towards them.
Founded in the year 2006 by Dr Sailen Goswami, the club has more than 100 memberships. The club does not have any age limit for interested people to join it. Besides, there is no joining fee or registration.
For the members of the club, the day begins with a jog early in the morning. After that all the members of the club gather inside the residential premises of Dr Goswami and start the day with the club�s anthem �Goswamir Poduli Uduli Muduli�. Every member shares a joke to make the others, standing in a circular formation, to laugh their heart out.
The members of the club have become part of a small family apart from their own families. They make sure that if any one of the members is in trouble, the others are there to help him/ her out. �After joining this club I have realized the importance of laughter in maintaining a healthy lifestyle�, said Usha Choudhury, the joint secretary of the club.
Every member of the club has their own tragic story in life. Someone has lost his son in a bomb blast or some are suffering from diabetes, blood pressure and other serious chronic ailments. �But when in the laughing club, they forget all their sufferings and become a part of the laughter,� said Choudhury. In March 2008, the club published a book named Probhati Laughing Club. The book is a compilation of comic short stories, articles and jokes by the members of the club.
Every year on March 12, the club organises its annual function to mark its birth. This year too they had organised this function in the presence of chief guest Tabiul Hussain. Also present in the function were renowned comedy artiste Kamal Singh (of Khichiri fame), famous mimicry artiste Swapan Modok and voice over artiste Kishore Choudhury.
