Late CM Gogois family to decide on Titabar candidate: APCC

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 29 - The decision regarding the Congress candidate for Titabar constituency in view of the 2021 Assembly elections will be taken by the family of former Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi. This was stated by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora here today. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an all-faith prayer and memorial meeting held in the memory of Gogoi at the Rajiv Bhawan, Bora said the party will try to adhere to the grand alliance concept mooted by the former Chief Minister for the next years Assembly elections.

Asked who will be the possible candidate from Titabar constituency in the 2021 elections, Bora said, We will leave the matter to the family (of Tarun Gogoi). The family will decide the candidate for Titabar. It may be mentioned here that the veteran leader and three-time Chief Minister, who passed away on November 23, represented the Titabar seat in the Assembly uninterruptedly from 2001 till the time of his demise. Bora claimed the BJP will not be able to wrest the Titabar seat from the Congress in the absence of Gogoi.

The emotional relationship of the people of Titabar with Tarun Gogoi was immense. People of Titabar are in a state of shock. BJP will not be able to do anything, Bora said.

Asked about the prospective opposition grand alliance, he said, We will try to follow the path of the grand alliance concept that was formulated by Gogoi by including the Congress, the AIUDF and other parties. We will go ahead as per directions of the high command.

Meanwhile, the APCC today organised an all-faith prayer and memorial meeting held in the memory of Gogoi at the Rajiv Bhawan. On the occasion, the party also passed a condolence resolution on the demise of Gogoi.

Addressing the gathering, Bora urged the Congress workers to remain united and follow the ideals of Gogoi.

Gogois death is not only a major loss for Assam but it is also a special loss for the Congress party. We have lost our guardian. The real tribute to the departed leader would be for all Congress members to follow Gogois ideals and try to fill the void created after his demise. This is a huge challenge for us. Only three months are left for the Assembly polls. But there is no reason to be demoralised. Try to gain strength from his (Gogois) ideals and memories, Bora said.

Senior Congress leaders, including Bora, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia, Deputy Leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Rakibul Hussain, Lok Sabha MPs Prodyut Bordoloi and Abdul Khaleque, among others paid floral tributes at a portrait of Gogoi and also shared their memories of the departed leader on the occasion.
