IMPHAL, May 24 - Residents of Leisang village in Manipurs Kangpokpi district which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared the last Indian village to have electrified last month, aired their grievances to State Chief Minister N Biren Singh during Meeyamgi Numit (Peoples Day) on Wednesday.
Village chairman Tongsat Haokip also urged the CM to set up necessary infrastructure in the village. Leisang, just 77 km from the State capital, is a very backward village.
The 80-odd residents of the village solely depend on kerosene lamp, candle and solar batteries for light. But the village got connected to a power grid for the first time since Independence, earning the distinction of being the last village in India to get electricity, three weeks back.
Now the villagers can watch a movie at a go from start to finish, without having to worry about recharging the solar batteries. Otherwise we watch Manipuri movies in installments depending on the batteries charged by solar photo voltaic plates, a villager said.
