Language is the mouthpiece of cultures: Gulzar

SILCHAR, Jan 22 � Augmenting the spirit of language, legendary lyricist and Chancellor of Assam University, Gulzar referred language to be an agent of cultural transformation and unity.

In his speech at the 21st foundation day of Assam University on Tuesday, Gulzar said �language is a very important part of our culture and deserves mention in every aspect of our lives.� In his words every language carries a rich culture with it.

�Language is the mouthpiece of cultures. There is a lot to gain from outside the realm of books. Let us try and find ways to connect ourselves to the varied bouquet of languages around us and reach out to the people,� Gulzar said.

Moreover, lauding the efforts of the university, the Chancellor said, �To reach the destination, the journey has to be a part of it. The university has done commendable job in its journey so far and the fraternity has the resources to excel in the coming days.�

Gulzar also took part in an interactive session with eminent theatre personality and alumnus of National School of Drama, Salim Arif and also recited his translations on the works of Tagore.

Earlier, Vice Chancellor Prof Somnath Dasgupta said �the foundation day is celebrated in the spirit of innovation.� He gave an account of the performance of the university in the last one year. A journal of Humanities and Social Sciences was also released on the occasion. The university also signed an MoU with London School of Training for soft skill development and career orientations.
