NORTH LAKHIMPUR, April 16 - The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam Students� Union presented its Aai Asomi Award to noted sculptor and artist Biren Singha on Sunday. The award instituted by Lakhimpur AASU is in the memory of all who lost their lives during Assam Movement spearheaded by it.
The award was presented to the veteran artist during the Rongali Bihu celebration ceremony organized by Lakhimpur AASU at the playground of North Lakhimpur Govt HS School in the presence of prominent citizens and public. The award which carries a cash of Rs 25,000, an eri sador, seleng, sarai and a decorated japi was presented by Krishna Das, financial secretary of AASU�s central committee and advisor of Lakhimpur AASU Sanjeev Konwar.
Receiving the award, sculptor Biren Singha acknowledged the positive roles played by AASU in maintaining and sustaining the issues pertaining to Assamese identity and being Assamese. He also spoke about his feelings on the festivities of Bohag Bihu and its importance of unifying factor in Assamese cultural milieu. Earlier, the Bihu welcoming ceremony by the AASU was inaugurated with the hoisting of the flag by Pulak Bora, president of the Lakhimpur AASU which was followed by swahid tarpan by Dhanmani Dutta, secretary of Lakhimpur AASU. The wall magazine, Gazali was inaugurated by Sayed Nazim Ahmed, veteran actor, reciter and ex-working president of Asom Natya Sanmilan. Prominent citizens, members of martyrs of Assam Movement, teachers, artists and others were felicitated by Lakhimpur AASU on that occasion.
