Lajong hold Churchill to goalless draw

By The Assam Tribune

VASCO, March 12 (IANS): Churchill Brothers stretched their unbeaten run to four games when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Shillong Lajong FC in an I-League encounter here on Sunday.

Churchill had the best chances of the match while Lajong mustered a few in the second period. Churchill are at the sixth position in the points table with 16 points from 14 outings while Lajong are fourth with 20 points from 13 matches.

The home side had two good chances to draw early blood. In the 11th minute, Churchill striker Anthony Wolfe robbed the ball off Yuta Kinowaki, turned and let fly a powerful shot which beat Lajong goalkeeper Vishal Kaith before coming off the post.

Kaith made another brilliant save to deny Ansumana Kromah's shot on the rebound a short while later.

Near the half hour mark, Brandon Fernandes' swipe from long range disturbed the bar, leaving Churchill coach Derrick Pereira to rue his luck.

In the second half, Dipanda Dicka and Fabio Pena had back to back chances for Lajong but both failed to convert.

Lajong also came close from Fabio's header which was acrobatically tipped over by Naveen Kumar in the Churchill goal.

In the closing stages, Wolfe took another swipe at goal but was blocked by Lajong defender Pritam Singh.
