TEZPUR, April 6 - It is indeed a glorious journey for Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sonitpur situated at Napam near Tezpur. From among the scores of KVKs, it won the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Krishi Vigyan Protsahan Puraskar 2017 for Zone-VI.

The journey of KVK, Sonitpur started in 1981 when the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi established the first KVK in Assam at Napam under the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat. Earlier, it was named as KVK, Napam according to the location where it was situated but afterwards when ICAR renamed all KVKs according to the districts in which they were situated, it was renamed as KVK, Sonitpur and its jurisdiction was confined to Sonitpur district.

In 38 years since its inception, this KVK has been trying to uplift the economic status of the farming community through various activities like lab-to-land programme, capacity building of farmers, farm women and rural youth, popularization of front line technology demonstration of crops, livestock and other components for livelihood upgradation of farm families. This year KVK, Sonitpur has been awarded Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Krishi Vigyan Protsahan Puraskar 2017 for Zone-VI. The award was given on the basis of evaluation of work done during 2016-17.
