By Correspondent

DIPHU, Dec 12 An apex social body of the Kuki community, Kuki National Assembly (KNA) has decided to take strong action against poachers found inside the Kaziranga National Park. KNA has recently formed an anti-poaching and wildlife crime cell in the name and style Anti-poaching and Wildlife Protection Committee to fight against the menace of poaching in the Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Helkam Guited, general secretary of the anti-poaching and Wildlife cell of KNA said, Our responsibility extends up to dealing firmly with illegal trade of animal parts in collaboration with the Government of Assam and the Central government by anti-social elements and dodgy gangs who have become a threat to the very existence of the rare species.

The apex Kuki organisation based in Manja area which is around 16 kilometres from Diphu represent mostly the Kuki population settled in the Singhason hill track situated at the centre of the districts eastern zone. Bulk of the Kuki population depends on the cultivation of ginger and other foodgrains which they grow at the terrace of the hilly slopes. The eastern part of Singhason range (Kohore division) touches the Bagori range of KNP. This area is the migratory route of the animal endemic to Karbi Anglong and KNP. Poachers and hunters generally use this track for their work.

We will extend our operation in and around Singhason hills of Karbi Anglong against the illegal exploitation of forest products like cane, bamboo, timber, sand, broom etc., which are being illegally carried out unabated, Helkam Guite added.

He further said that the wild life cell has strictly prohibited hunting, poisoning of rivers for fishing and illegal felling of trees in and around Kuki-inhabited areas. The wild life cell further warned that anyone found indulging in any of the above-mentioned activities will be dealt with firmly by the competent authorities.
