SHILLONG, April 4 - The Khasi Students Union today staged a protest rally in front of the Atomic Minerals Directorates (AMD) regional office here at Nongmynsong reiterating its opposition to any move to mine uranium in Meghalaya.

The KSU members spoke against uranium mining during the Khasi National Awakening Day. There was heavy deployment of security personnel. Anti-riot police personnel vans and squads were at the AMD office.

As a precautionary measure, shops in the area were closed and security personnel deployed all along the stretch of road leading to the AMD regional office at Nongmynsong.

Meanwhile, the State government has said that no uranium mining would be allowed in the State without the consent of the people. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has also made the assurance in the Assembly of not going for uranium mining if the people arent willing.

In fact the State government last year revoked its earlier decision to allow the Uranium Corporation of India Limited to conduct pre-mining activities in the State. Uranium deposit is found in West Khasi Hills district of the State.
