KSU opposes Minerals Funding Trust

By CORRESPONDENT

DIPHU, Sept 1 - The Karbi Students Union (KSU) has decided to oppose the Government of Assams move to form District Minerals Funding Trust (DMFT) within Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council administered area as the KAAC was not taken into confidence before the move. The organisation has termed the governments move as a blatant attempt to undermine the councils authority.

Publicity secretary of KSU Sar-im Tokbi through a press statement expressing its displeasure has flayed the government notification on the issue stating that it is violating the power of KAAC under Article 244(2) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

It is clearly mentioned in the constitution that any taxes and royalty levied from leasing the extract of mineral resources in the Autonomous District goes to the Autonomous Council, also the Mines and Minerals Regulation and Development Act, 2016 in its Section 9 clause (B) of paragraph 4 stated that in the in autonomous region, land should be dealt in accordance with the Article 244. Therefore, we believe that such forceful imposition is a vehement act to curtail the power of autonomous council conferred to them under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution, the organisation stated. The KSU has demanded revocation of the order issued by the Department of Mines & Minerals, Government of Assam at the earliest.
