HAFLONG, April 2 The Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), Songpijang unit, strongly condemned the attack on one Khupgouhen Hengna of Songpijang village by some policemen at a UBI ATM counter in Haflong on Saturday evening.

According to a press release issued by the KSO unit, the policemen mercilessly beat up the college student hitting him on his head, stomach and other parts moments after he came out of the ATM. Seriously injured, he was taken to the Haflong Police Station, after which where he was admitted to the Haflong Civil Hospital for treatment.

As per the statement given by the injured, there were too many persons queuing up in the ATM counter. Then some policemen arrived on the scene and forcibly tried to withdraw cash. This resulted in confusion and rush among the people standing in the queue. In the midst of this, Hengna managed to withdraw cash and came out of the ATM counter. Then, one of the policemen hit him in his stomach with his rifle and then punched and knocked him. His colleagues also joined this assault. Hengna was about to fall unconscious and in this state he could not clearly see how many persons actually hit him.

Hengna stated that it was an attempt to murder as one of the policemen even loaded his rifle to shoot him. However, what might have saved him was the open place near the main road that was teeming with people.

The KSO, Songpijang unit, urged the district administration as well as the police department to bring the culprits to book and hand them exemplary punishment to ensure justice and to prevent such incidents from ocurring in future. The KSO unit also demanded adequate compensation to the victim for his treatment and restoration of health. Otherwise, the organisation would be compelled to launch an agitation programme within a few days, the press release said.
