Korean TT coach to train in city

GUWAHATI, June 7 � Table tennis coach Li Jung Sik of DPR Korea will conduct a month long coaching camp for the State paddlers.

The camp, organised by Assam Table Tennis Association (ATTA), got off at the ABITA Indoor Stadium here today. After a couple of days the camp will be shifted to the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium where 15 tables of international standard will be set. Addressing the media, ATTA president and State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain said, after a gap of 27 years Assam has been able to manage a foreign coach for the State paddlers. Earlier, Korean coaches Pak U Gil and Kim Li Mu held coaching camps here in 1978 and 1985 respectively. Introducing Jung Sik, Hussain hoped that the State TT players will be able to give finer tips of the game and uplift the standard of the State in the national scenario.

ATTA secretary Tridib Duvarah thanked the Table Tennis Federation of India for releasing the coach for one month to Assam. He revealed that the ATTA has shortlisted 62 players who have represented the State in nationals and have ranking. Apart from that the State TT body has asked the districts to send three boys and as many girls for the camp. Former international players Nandini Baruah expressed satisfaction over the ATTA activities and said like Pak U Gil, under whom she underwent training, will also be able to produce some champion players. Another international Carfew Roy hoped Assam will again be able to introduce some talent in the national TT circuit within a short span of time.

Govinda Upadhyay and Biman Bhagabati will assist the Korean coach.
