Koch-Rajbongshis seek select committees report

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Oct 24 - The All Koch Rajbongshi Yuva Chatra Sanmilani has called upon the Union Government to place the report on the ST demand of the community, prepared by a select committee almost 18 years ago, before the Parliament.

For Koch-Rajbongshis, the modality for granting ST status is not required as the community got the status in 1996 through an ordinance issued by the then President.

When the Bill was placed in Parliament in 1998, a single member of the Parliament had opposed it and due to which instructions were given to the select committee to submit a report on the issue. But the report has not been placed in Parliament till date, which is a clear murder of democratic rights of the community, said Tridip Pati Singha, the Sanmilanis adviser.

So, the Sanmilani has demanded that the Union Government to act on the select committees report instead of imposing modalities on the community.

The Sanmilani has also called upon the leaders of the community to boycott meetings with the Government on the modality and stick to the select committees report on the demand.

If the Government does not reveal the report of the select committee, the Sanmilani would pose a challenge before the present Government to meet the demand, warned Ramen Talukdar, the Sanmilanis president.
