Koch-Rajbongshi stir today over ST status

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 28 As political parties including the ruling Congress are gearing up for the coming Assembly elections, it is time for different organisations to press their demands and remind the government about the promises it had made.

On Tuesday, the Koch Rajbongshi United Forum consisting of 10 organisations representing the community reminded Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi about his assurance to give ST status to the Koch Rajbongshi community and threatened to intensify its agitation if the government failed to meet the long standing demand of the community.

The forum will stage a two-hour dharna before Raj Bhawan on September 29 to protest against the alleged indifference of the government towards its demand.

A functionary of the forum said that if there is no positive response from the government, the community will boycott the Congress in the coming Assembly elections. We will not allow the Congress to campaign in the areas dominated by the Koch Rajbongshi community if our demand is not met, he said.

The forum will approach the President, Prime Minister and Union Home Minister in October with its demand. The forum will also meet the leader of the Opposition party and the leaders of all the other national parties to mobilize support for their demand.
