KAZIRANGA, Nov 30 - The final compilation of data collected from 24 different compartments or blocks during Wednesday�s day-long �Census of Eastern Swamp Deer in Kaziranga National Park was successfully completed.
Forest officials of Kaziranga National Park said that this year physical counting of the species in Kaziranga National Park had put the total population of Eastern Swamp Deer at 907, which is less than the last census figure carried out in 2016, where the total population was 1,148.
But sources added that last year�s heavy flood in Kaziranga had killed many wild animals, including Eastern Swamp Deer.
According to a press release issued by the Director of Kaziranga National Park, out of the 907 Eastern Swamp Deer, 235 were male, 505 female and 167 were calves.
According to information available, in the Eastern Range of Agaratoli, there were 4 blocks or compartments in which 156 Eastern Swamp Deer were recorded by the census enumerators.
Similarly, in the Central Range of Kaziranga National Park, there were 8 blocks or compartments in which 350 Eastern Swamp Deer were recorded. In the Western Range at Bagori, there were 323 herbivores recorded from 7 blocks or compartments. In Burapahar, there were 22 Eastern Swamp Deer covering 3 blocks.
In Biswanath Wildlife Division under the jurisdiction of Kaziranga National Park authority, there were 2 blocks or compartments and 56 number of the same species recorded.
According to official sources, most of the species of Eastern Swamp Deer are now pregnant and expected to give birth to new individuals by the later part of January and February.
A pre-census briefing was held on November 27 at the Forest Convention Centre here where the enumerators were apprised about the methods and processes of head counting of the species inside the forest by Research Officer R Sharma.
