RAHA, Dec 20 - For promotion of legal literacy and imparting knowledge about the important provisions of the Indian Constitution, Justice N Kotiswar Singh, Judge of Gauhati High Court-cum-Executive Chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority visited Nagaon recently in connection with a day-long programme organised by the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) Nagaon under the guidance of its Secretary Pronita Morang.
Singh chaired an interactive session with the students of Concept Junior College, Ramanujan College and Sandipani Vidya Mandir in the auditorium of Concept Junior College.
The interactive session was conducted by Satya Nath Sharma, Member Secretary of Assam Legal Service Authority, Gitali Rabha, Deputy Secretary of Assam Legal Service Authority, Jyotshna Das, Secretary of DLSA, Kamrup, Pronita Morang, Secretary of DLSA, Nagaon, Mrinaljyoti Bezbaruah, Principal of Concept Junior College and advocates Rupali Goswami, and Simpi Borah. More than 300 students of the aforementioned institutions were also present.
Chairing the interactive session, Singh explained about the provisions of the Constitution of India and its significance and role in protecting our Fundamental Rights.
He further added that legal literacy helps in seeking remedies against exploitation and injustice. But often it is seen that legal literacy is considered to be a subject matter only for those who practice law and this concept needs to be changed.
Legal literacy should not be confined only to legal personalities, instead it needs to be extended amongst the common people, marginalised section of the people and amongst the most vulnerable section of the society, that is women and children as they are more prone to be exposed to any offence.
An open quiz contest based on legal knowledge was also conducted amongst the students where Sandipani Vidyamandir was declared the winner.
Singh also paid a visit to Nagaon District Jail to have an idea about the prisoners� legal needs. He also conducted an interactive session with all the members of District Legal Service Authority, Nagaon, which was attended by Jadav Saikia, Deputy Commissioner, Shankarbrata Raimedhi, Superintendent of Police, Debasish Baishya, CEO of Zila Parishad, Prabin Sharma, Inspector of Schools, Dinesh Das, Social Welfare Officer, Dr Bijoya Baruah and Dr Jiaur Ahmed, representatives of Joint Director of Health Services and senior advocate Pradyut Kumar Borah, Mahesh Das and Sarat Khound, besides others. He interacted with the members of Nagaon Bar Association whereby Abul Hasem Khandakar, president of Nagaon Bar Association and other advocates also took part.
In his brief speech, Singh appealed to all the advocates to resolve to the ADR mechanism in appropriate cases and also encouraged them to provide Pro Bono Legal Services.
