NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 4 The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti today warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister and Lakhimpur MP Sarbananda Sonowal over the Centres move to resume construction work on the 10,000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro-electrical power plant dam at Gerukamukh by the NHPC. This was said by KMSS Lakhimpur unit president Azad Hazarika and secretary Pradeep Gogoi at a press meet here today.
The KMSS leaders said that Narendra Modi used the anti-dam issue as a poll plank during the Lok Sabha elections but went on to lay the foundation stone of a run-of-the river hydro-electrical power plant dam in Bhutan after assuming the office of the Prime Minister ignoring the concerns of the people living in the downstream areas, namely in Assam.
The KMSS also flayed Sonowal for following the dictum of Modi on the Gerukamukh dam issue by ignoring his people who had voted for him in the recent LS polls.
The KMSS leaders warned both Prime Minister Modi and Sonowal of stiff opposition in the coming days and criticized Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal for having no idea on the rivers of Assam for his reported initiative to resume construction work at the Gerukamukh dam.
The construction of the Gerukamukh dam was stalled following agitation by KMSS, along with other organizations, following a discussion on January 5, 2012. However, as reported, the NHPC is now readying itself to restart the construction of the dam with the help of the Centre, the KMSS leaders said and added that they would start a massive agitation against the dam if its construction work is resumed and asked the public to participate in this anti-dam movement.
