KMSS stops barges carrying turbines

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 3 Three barges carrying the nine turbines of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) have been forced to return from the Bishwanathghat of Sonitpur district today following the resistance offered by the people. The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) was organising a demonstration in front of the office of the Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) for an indefinite period demanding return of the turbines to the places of their origin.

According to a KMSS press statement here, the three barges are now bound for Pandu ferry ghat in Guwahati. The KMSS has demanded that the three barges along with the trucks and trailers proposed to be used in carrying the turbines by road from Bishwanathghat should immediately be sent back from the State.

The KMSS is determined to compel the authorities concerned to take back the turbines to their places of origin, said the peasant organisation in its statement. The peasant organisation has also made an appeal to all the national, ethnic and progressive organisations of the State to take part in the struggle to resist the execution of the LSHEP.
