KMSS rally in Dibrugarh for land rights

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Feb 20 After spearheading a mammoth rally close to the official residence of Deputy Commissioner here, Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) today compelled the district administration to give a firm assurance on fulfilling their charter of demands, primarily the demand pertaining to land rights.

Thousands of peasants from different parts of the district, including workers from tea plantations, blocked the Mancotta Road near the DCs residence for more than five hours.

Layers of armed policemen were placed as barricades on all roads and lanes leading to the DC office to thwart the marching peasants.

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi had threatened to storm the DCs office if their legitimate demands were not granted.

After three hours of hard bargaining with the district administration led by DC, Aruna Rajoria, the KMSS leaders were assured that the forest villages within the district, where traditional forest dwellers have been settled, would be converted into revenue villages within three months under the provisions of relevant Acts.
