By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today announced the formation of a new political party. The new party has been named Raijor Dal and was launched on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Seventy indigenous groups, which were with the KMSS during the anti-CAA agitation, as well as the Sanjukta Anchalik Dal Asom of Arup Borbora, and the Bir Lachit Sena, have backed the new regional party.

The new party made it clear that it would be a united, uncompromising, progressive, and healthy regional force. It also said that it wants to build a progressive Assam under the leadership of the indigenous communities while maintaining the partys regional identity. The Chief State Convenors of the new party will be Akhil Gogoi, KMSS president Bhasco De Saikia, Lohit Gogoi, Mahendra Dihingia, Alok Nath, Hussain Mohammed Shahjahan, Jitul Deka, Ratneswar Deori, Girishankar Goswami and Rubul Das.

The advisory committee will comprise eminent intellectual Dr Hiren Gohain, noted filmmaker Jahnu Barua, renowned educationist Udayaditya Bharali, noted artiste Prithviraj Rabha, eminent tea community intellectual Sanjay Kumar Tanti, senior advocate of Gauhati High Court Hafiz Rashid Choudhury, educationists Dr Narayan Sarma, Dr Sitanath Lahkar, Ghanashyam Nath, singer JP Das, senior advocate Satyendra Prasad Deka, and prominent womens rights activist Sumitra Hazarika, among others.

Announcing the name of the new party at a press conference here, Jahnu Barua said, Today is a historic day for Assam and for the indigenous people of the State. It is not a small thing for so many organisations, having their own plans and policies, to unite. Today the situation of Assam is such that there is an imperative need for all the indigenous communities to unite.

People of Assam are now aware. Many have joined hands together. The younger generation of Assam is committed to this path towards unity. This power should be used productively. I am also ready to extend my cooperation. AASU and AJYCP also recently formed a party. That is one power. And the party formed here today is also such a power. It is not necessary that they stand apart.

KMSS is a big organisation. I am not a member of KMSS. But we all know that for years KMSS has been fighting for the people of Assam. Likewise, Bir Lachit Sena is another such strong organisation. This is an auspicious beginning, he said.

The new party will take a firm stand against both the ruling BJP-led NDA as well as the Congress and the AIUDF.

Bhasco De Saikia said that the aim of the new party will be to ensure the defeat of both the BJP and the Congress-AIUDF alliance in the 2021 elections.

Ours will be an inclusive party that will fight to safeguard the interests of all sections of people of Assam, irrespective of caste, community, creed and ethnicity, he said, adding that particular emphasis will be given for upholding the interests of the indigenous communities of the State.

He further said that the party will do its best to rid the State of inter-ethnic and inter-religious conflicts and for unity among all sections of Assams society.

The Raijor Dal also urged the Left parties to come and join hands with it.

The party has decided to adopt the slogan Think Globally, Act Locally, with emphasis on rural development.
