KMSS lashes out at CM

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 22 The role of the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues on the mega dam issue is frustrating and they are bound to face the wrath of the people in the next Assembly elections for this sin of theirs, warned Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) secretary Akhil Gogoi here today. He was reacting to the statements made by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today and States Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi yesterday on the mega dam issue.

The KMSS secretary, who was speaking to The Assam Tribune, said that the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues are behaving like the monarchs of Assam being completely oblivious of the fact that they are sent to power for a limited period by the people in a democratic set-up. People of Assam have the legitimate democratic right to dethrone these rulers for their going against the popular will, said the KMSS secretary.

He also described the Chief Ministers statement that the mega dams would check flood and erosion as a mockery of truth. In fact the mega dams proposed in the NE region are only meant for hydroelectric power generation.

The concepts of the mega dams proposed by Dr KL Rao in the 1960s to check flood and erosion and the multi-purpose dams proposed by the Brahmaputra Board in the 1980s for checking flood and erosion and to irrigate the tilling fields and to generate power were abandoned by the Indian rulers at the instance of the power lobby.

This fact is concealed by Tarun Gogoi and his ministers conveniently to promote the interest of the power lobby and they have joined the chorus of the power lobby that the mega dams would structurally be stable in a bid to confuse the people. But the fact remains that only the issue of safety of the structures of the mega dams has not been agitating the minds of the NE people, particularly of Assam.

What is agitating their minds is the fact that the mega dams are viewed with the eyes of the structural engineers. The other issues like biodiversity, flood and erosion are not considered by the proponents of these dams.

The mega dam lobby wants the people to forget the fact that NE region is one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world. They also try to hide from the people of the NE region one more fact that the region, after being devastated by increased vehemence of flood and erosion in this era of melting glaciers, would never be in a position to consume even 10,000 MW of power. Let alone their consuming around 60,000 MW proposed to be generated in the region.

That the hydel power projects are going to amplify the dangers of flood and erosion is evident from the fact that the once serene rivers like the Ranganadi, Beki and the Kopili have become ferocious after the hydel power dams were installed on them, said the KMSS secretary.

It is hence clear that the NE people are sought to be subjected to the adverse impacts of the mega dams while the power generated in their region would be benefiting the people of other region. This is nothing but a colonial design. Tarun Gogoi and his company is trying to promote this conspiracy like the dedicated subedars of Delhi and the Indian power lobby, alleged the KMSS secretary.
