KMSS demo against hike in power tariff

GUWAHATI, July 27 � Members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) today staged demonstrations and sit-in demonstrations in the district headquarters of the State in protest against the proposal of the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) to raise the power tariff by another 56 paise with effect from August 1 next.

The KMSS said in a statement here today that its members demanded subvention from the Government to the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), supply of oil, gas and coal of Assam to the power companies of the State at controlled price and opposed the attempt at privatizing the government agencies/departments, among others.

In the city, KMSS members staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's Office and submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Power Minister and Chairman of the ASEB.

Some members of the organisation also staged a demonstration in front of the Bijuli Bhawan, the ASEB headquarters at around 1 pm and they were taken by the police to the Sonaram HS School playground and detained there till 4 pm.

In the meantime, the sit-in demonstration staged by the KMSS members led by their general secretary Akhil Gogoi on the ASEB campus, in support of their demands on the issue, entered third day today.
