By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 24 The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has called a 12- hour Assam bandh from 5 am tomorrow in protest against the arrest of its secretary Akhil Gogoi, killing of three innocent persons and injuring scores of people by the police on June 22 at Dispur. However, all examinations and emergency services have been exempted from the purview of the bandh.

In a statement here, the KMSS said that its secretary Akhil Gogoi was arrested on fabricated charges today. Against the arrest of Gogoi, the KMSS would pursue the legal course, besides building a democratic movement intensely.

The KMSS is resolutely determined to resist the design of the Assam Government to crush the democratic movement of the toiling masses of the people on the issue of their rights over land and water and paddy prices. The KMSS has by this time been able to organise the people of the State on these issues and it will intensify its struggle on these issues in the near future.

The spontaneous participation of the people in the protest programmes against the arrest of Akhil Gogoi today manifests in the success attained by the KMSS in this respect, said the peasant organization in its statement and made an appeal to the people to make tomorrows bandh a success.

Meanwhile, the Jorhat district unit of the KMSS has also called for a 12-hour bandh tomorrow against the arrest of Gogoi and 17 of its members by the police.

The Goalpara district unit of the KMSS has extended its full support to the 12-hour bandh called by the KMSS central committee, said Dibyajyoti Rabha, secretary of the Goalpara district unit of the KMSS.

Morigaon district KMSS this afternoon staged a road blockade on NH 37 in protest against Akhils arrest. It has also called a 12-hour Morigaon district bandh from 5 am tomorrow.

Protests were also made at Dergaon against Akhils arrest under the aegis of KMSS Dergaon unit and effigies of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were burnt.
