By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 28 The eighth day of hunger strike by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) against transfer of agricultural land for non- agricultural purposes, witnessed a scuffle between the police and protesters today at Panbazar, resulting in the arrest of 30 KMSS activists including its leader Akhil Gogoi.

According to police sources, the organization had obtained permission for hunger strike by ten protesters, but around 50-60 members gathered for a procession up to the DC office, without the necessary permission. The protesters also broke the police barricade near the Cotton College and blocked the traffic, the police said.

The arrested KMSS members were released after 6 pm.

On the other hand, the KMSS said that the procession was taken out today after waiting for the governments response for a prolonged period. The organization alleged that the police resorted to a barbaric lathicharge on the protesters causing severe injuries to several of its members.

According to a statement from the organization, from tomorrow, the movement against transfer of agricultural land to the big corporate houses would be started in a new form.
