GUWAHATI, June 3 - The Assam State Kisan Sabha has flayed Agriculture Minister Atul Bora for blaming it on the farmers for chaffy panicles of paddy crops and demanded a thorough inquiry to find out the truth behind the crop failure.
Very conveniently, the State Agriculture Minister shifted the blame on farmers for buying seeds from unrecognised dealers, which according to him caused the chaffy grains in paddy cultivation. Whereas the truth is that many farmers who bought seeds from government sources also faced a similar fate, Sabha general secretary Tiken Das said.
The Sabha further stated that by merely blaming it on the farmers the authorities cannot shrug off their responsibility. Due to the inadequate supply and delay in supplying the seeds by the government, the farmers had to buy seeds from private parties. Along with ensuring adequate supply of seeds to the farmers, the government should also take steps against the dealers selling adulterated seeds, the Sabha demanded.
It also demanded adequate compensation to the farmers affected by the chaffy crops.
