Khurshid assures steps on flood problem

NALBARI, April 7 � The Union Minority Affairs Minister, Salman Khurshid, today addressed a poll rally at Mukalmua in Nalbari to boost the poll campaign of Congress candidate Dr Bhumidhar Barman.

Addressing the rally, Khurshid said that the Congress government had adopted a number of schemes for the uplift of minority people. He added that when the most of States in the country have been facing scarcity of drinking water, flood and erosion have emerged as a major problem in Assam. The Union minister assured that the Central government would take steps for solution of the flood and erosion problems. He added that the Congress would form the government in the State and senior minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman would be the man of the match.

The Congress party also took out a huge motorbike rally from Mukalmua and moved through the entire Barskhetri constituency. Senior Congress leader Dr Bhumidhar Barman also took part in the rally.

On the other hand, the major Opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) also organised a series of poll meetings at Rampur, Ghoga and Morowa at the constituency in favour of AGP nominee Pulakesh Barua. AGP leader Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya addressed the meetings and called upon the people to oust the Congress from power. He expressed confidence about Pulakesh Barua�s victory from the constituency which is considered a bastion of the Congress.

Our Nagaon Correspondent adds: Union Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today addressed an election meeting at Beltali in Nagaon LAC.

In his speech, Khurshid praised the Gogoi Government in Assam for initiating peace process with militant organizations, particularly with the ULFA . For continuing the development works started by the Tarun Gogoi-led Government in Assam, the Minister appealed to the voters to strengthen his hands and vote for the Congress candidate.

Minorities are safe only when the Congress is in power, he added.

Former cricket star and Congress MP from Muradabad Mohd Azharuddin also addressed the rally and appealed to vote for Congress nominee Dr Durlabh Chamua. Congress MP from Rampur ( UP ) Noor Banu also came to campaign for Dr Chamua. She visited especially the minority-dominated areas of this constituency.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of DoNER Bijay Krishna Handique along with Samaguri LAC candidate Rockybul Hussain addressed a number of meetings in the constituency. They criticized former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta for his misdeeds and failures when he was in power in the State.
