Karimganj Police to verify papers of declared foreigners

By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 10 - Karimganj Police has initiated a drive to verify and assess the documents submitted by the family members of persons declared as foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunal.

Around 2,500 persons have been declared as foreigners in Karimganj district by the Foreigners Tribunal and approximately 1,200 family members of the declared individuals have applied by submitting their documents for verification as a part of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process, said Karimganj Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay.

However, minors estimated to be around 800, are not included in the process, the SP added.

Further, Upadhyay mentioned that police has asked the family members to submit their documents which would be forwarded to the Tribunal, a process to ensure that no illegal person gets through into the updated NRC at the cost of genuine Indian citizens.

This is only a process to analyse and assess documents and there is no reason to panic at all. Some media reports on arrest of people is obviously spreading confusion in the society, which should not happen. There will be no arrest of the family members of the declared foreigners as of now, the SP clarified.

On the other hand, North Karimganj MLA Kamalakshya Dey Purakayastha has said that he spoke to the SP and made it clear that people must not be harassed at any cost.

I feel fair publication of the NRC will be panacea for all the troubles faced by the people. The Government must look into the matter with priority. the legislator maintained.
