Karbi Anglong Council polls on Jan 4

GUWAHATI, Dec 15 � The election to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) will be held on January 4 next year. The poll process, which began today with the first notification, will be over before Magh Bihu. This was announced by the Assam State Election Commission here today.

State Election Commissioner Biren Dutta, addressing media persons here, said that the voters� list for all the 26 constituencies of KAAC has been prepared following the due process.

It needs to be mentioned here that a total of 5,86,504 voters will elect their representatives to the KAAC. Out of the total voters, 2,99,284 are males and 2,87,220 are females. The model code of conduct will be in force till the election process is over.

�The last date of filing nomination is December 22 (between 11 am to 3 pm) and scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on the same day after 3 pm and on December 23 if not completed on the previous day,� said Dutta. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 26.

The voters will exercise their franchise across 798 polling stations from 7 am to 3 pm. The Commission has fixed January 7 for repoll if any. The counting will take place on January 9.

�We are taking the security aspect seriously and assessment is going on. So far we have not identified any hypersensitive or sensitive polling station,� said Dutta adding that the Commission would be ready to meet any eventuality on the law-and-order front.

There will be three returning officers and six observers to ensure the polls are conducted fairly.

On the other hand, the candidates this time will be able to spend more on their campaigning as the Commission has raised the expenditure of the candidates from Rs 60,000 to Rs 2 lakh.
