Kaptan Singh Solanki sworn in as Tripura Governor

AGARTALA, Aug 25 - Kaptan Singh Solanki today took oath of office and secrecy as the new Governor of Tripura in a simple ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of the old Raj Bhavan here.

Solanki, who had served as the Governor of Haryana for a little over four years, was administered the oath of office and secretary by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura, Ajay Rastogi.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, his Cabinet colleagues Ratan Lal Nath, NC Debbarma, Mever Kumar Jamatia, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and Chief Secretary Sanjeev Ranjan were present in the ceremony.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the Governor was accorded a guard of honour by the jawans of the Tripura State Rifles.

Speaking to reporters later, Solanki said the responsibility of a Governor is to safeguard the Constitution. �I will do this with utmost care,� he reiterated. Solanki landed at the Agartala Airport this morning and was received by the Chief Minister.

Significantly, Opposition leader Manik Sarkar and other CPM leaders were conspicuous by their absence in the swearing-in ceremony.

Earlier, outgoing Governor Tathagata Roy, who has been shifted to Meghalaya as its new Governor, was bid farewell by the Chief Minister.
