GUWAHATI, May 26 � Noted journalist and former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, Kanaksen Deka was conferred the Anairam Nunisa award for lifetime achievement in the field of journalism at a function held today. Governor of Assam JB Patnaik handed over the award to Deka.
Speaking on the occasion, Kanaksen Deka said that though the political leadership of the State failed to build a strong and prosperous Assam over the years, the world of literature, culture and journalism, however, have successfully grown up here.
The award in the name of social activist Anairam Nunisa instituted by the family members of Nunisa and Gandharva Prakashan consist of a citation, sarai, gamosa and a cash amount of Rs 20,000.
Speaking about maintaining the credibility of newspapers and journalism as a whole, he said that a journalist's duty is to serve the society and the report should be considered trustworthy by the people.
Further stressing on society building, Deka referred to two great visionaries of State viz. Srimanta Sankardev and Jyotiprasad Agarwala. �Srimanta Sankardev was the first economist of Assam, who planned a sustainable living standard for the people, where everyone was allotted a particular work. More than religion, his efforts were directed towards building a strong society.�
In a speech, delivered in Assamese, Assam Governor JB Patnaik praised Kanaksen Deka for his relentless efforts as a journalist. "His struggle to establish and run a pioneer Assamese daily newspaper is known to us all. He has also established himself as a writer, poet and playwright," he said.
Noted educationist Sivnath Barman, journalists Haidar Hussain and ex-president of Dimasa Sahitya Sabha Dr Motilal Nunisa also spoke on the occasion.
