GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - The district administration and City Police today said elaborate arrangements have been made for peaceful and secure celebration of Durga Puja in Guwahati.

Addressing the media here, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Mukesh Agarwal and Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu said that detailed guidelines and instructions have been issued to all the puja committees in the city for adhering to certain norms including safety standards, environmental rules, crowd management and so on.

The two officials also held a meeting this morning with representatives of all the puja committees to exchange views for ensuring a peaceful and secure Durga Puja.

Agarwal said that around 30-35 puja locations have been identified as sensitive from the crowd management and location points of view. In those locations, strict security vigil will be maintained by the police.

Three committees headed by senior district administration officials have been constituted, in charge of each of the police districts, for coordination at the local level.

We are giving emphasis on structural fitness of pandals and also on electrical fitness, Agarwal said, adding that puja committees will have to secure NoCs from PWD and other departments as well as electrical fitness certificates.

He added, We have also asked the puja committees to have some female volunteers also for the security of female devotees.

Immersion at four designated places will take place on October 23. However, at Pandu Ghat there is a tradition of having a two-day immersion ceremony and we will consider having it for two days at Pandu this time also, said Dr Angamuthu.

He said maximum emphasis is being given on disaster management provisions like fire and electrical safety and crowd management.

The immersion day will be a dry day. There is also a proposal to ply city buses till 2 am during the Durga Puja days.
